According to Lee County and her Forebears by Alexander Nunn  Isham (Son of Benjamin Franklin and Nancy Parker Meadows) was a farmer and grist mill owner in Chambers Co. Early settlers had immediate need for their corn to be ground converting it into grits or meal. The alternative was lye hominy, parched corn, or the mortar and pestle method of breaking up the corn to make cornbread.
Ben Meadows gave land for the Hepzibah Cemetery, Chambers County, (now Lee County). He and his wife Nancy, were members of Hepzibah Primitive Baptist Church and are buried there on the highest point. Ben also gave land on which Halawakee Academy for girls was built in 1836. The original log structure was torn down and a new school built in 1849. Marshall J. Thompson was a trustee of the school.
